About San Dieguito River Park in San Diego
The San Dieguito River Park is a vast regional greenway spanning 92,000 acres in San Diego County, California. Established in 1989, the park stretches for 55 miles from the mouth of San Dieguito Lagoon, situated between Solana Beach and Del Mar, to the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve near Julian. The park follows the course of the San Dieguito River, showcasing diverse landscapes and ecosystems characteristic of San Diego County's natural beauty.
The park is managed by a joint powers authority comprising San Diego County and the cities of Del Mar, Escondido, Poway, San Diego, and Solana Beach. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive preservation and management of the park's extensive resources.
A key feature of the San Dieguito River Park is the Coast to Crest Trail. As of 2017, 45 miles of the planned 70-mile trail have been completed, offering visitors the opportunity to traverse the park from the ocean to the river's source. In addition to the main trail, the park boasts over 20 miles of auxiliary trails, providing diverse hiking experiences for visitors of varying skill levels.
The park's ecosystem is rich and varied, supporting numerous plant and animal species. Over 230 bird species have been recorded within the park boundaries, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers. The coastal sage scrub habitat is home to several notable species, including the least Bell's vireo, cactus wren, California gnatcatcher, and San Diego horned lizard.
In 2011, a significant restoration project was completed at the San Dieguito Lagoon, enhancing the park's coastal wetlands. This $86 million project has further improved the ecological value of the park and provides additional opportunities for visitors to experience and learn about coastal habitats.
The San Dieguito River Park offers a range of recreational activities beyond hiking. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and bird watching. The park also includes historical sites such as the Sikes Adobe historic farmstead near Lake Hodges, offering glimpses into the area's rich cultural heritage.
