About Heritage Park in San Diego
Heritage County Park is a 7.8-acre urban park located in the heart of historic Old Town San Diego, California. Established in the 1970s, the park was developed to preserve examples of San Diego's Victorian architecture from the late 19th century. It features several restored Victorian homes and the city's first synagogue, which were all relocated from their original locations with the help of San Diego County and the Save Our Heritage Organisation.
The park showcases various architectural styles including Italianate, Stick-Eastlake, Queen Anne, and Classic Revival. Among the notable structures are the Sherman-Gilbert House, built in 1887 and known for hosting famous entertainers, and the Senlis Cottage, a modest 1896 building that represents working-class dwellings of the era. Other significant buildings include the Bushyhead House, Christian House, McConaughy House, Burton House, and Temple Beth Israel, San Diego's first synagogue built in 1889.
Visitors can explore the exteriors of these historic buildings and learn about San Diego's architectural heritage. The Senlis Cottage and Temple Beth Israel are open for public viewing. The park also features well-maintained gardens, walking paths, and informative displays that narrate the stories of early San Diego residents.
Heritage County Park serves as an educational resource, offering insights into the city's cultural and social history during the Victorian era. It provides a peaceful retreat within the bustling Old Town area, allowing visitors to step back in time and appreciate the architectural beauty of a bygone era.
