About Turk-Hyde Mini Park in San Francisco
Turk-Hyde Mini Park is a small urban oasis located at the corner of Turk and Hyde Streets in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. The park, which occupies 6,500 square feet, was renovated and reopened in March 2020 after a nine-month closure for improvements.
The park caters primarily to younger children, including those who attend preschool nearby. This is particularly important given that the Tenderloin has the highest number of children per capita in San Francisco, but limited outdoor spaces.
The renovation, which cost $1.7 million, was funded by the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond and additional support from the office of former Mayor Ed Lee. The project included updates to the children's play area, landscaping, site accessibility, and related amenities.
A notable feature of the park is a mural by artist Sylvester Guard, Jr., which was added to the wall overlooking the park at the end of 2019. The mural depicts flowers and hummingbirds, adding a vibrant visual element to the space.
To ensure the safety and appropriate use of the park, entry is restricted to those accompanied by children. This measure helps maintain the park as a secure environment for its intended young users in the heart of the Tenderloin.
