About Mountain Lake Park in San Francisco

Mountain Lake Park is a 14-acre urban oasis located in the Richmond District on the West Side of San Francisco, California. Situated north of the intersection of Lake Street and Funston Avenue, the park was designed by engineer William Hammond Hall in the late 19th century, circa 1875.

The park's centerpiece is Mountain Lake, a 4-acre natural freshwater lake that holds significant historical and ecological importance. It is one of the last surviving natural lakes in San Francisco and the only natural lake in the entire Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The lake has served as a vital water source for various groups throughout history, including indigenous Ohlone people, Spanish explorers, and early San Francisco settlers.

In 1776, Spanish Lieutenant Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza and his expedition camped near Mountain Lake while scouting for a site to establish the Presidio. A plaque commemorating this historical event was placed in the park in September 1957.

Over the years, Mountain Lake Park has faced environmental challenges. The construction of the MacArthur Tunnel and the Funston Avenue approach to the Golden Gate Bridge in 1939 reduced the size of the lake and introduced pollutants from road runoff. However, recent restoration efforts by the Partnership for the Presidio have helped clean up the water and soil, allowing for the reintroduction of native species.

The park offers a range of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It features a playground that underwent extensive remodeling and reopened in 2017, providing modern play structures for children. The park also includes tennis courts, a half basketball court, and one of the oldest Parcourses (fitness trails) in San Francisco, installed in 1974.

Mountain Lake Park is a popular spot for dog owners, with a designated off-leash area for dogs to exercise and socialize. The park's large meadow is frequently used for picnics, team sports practice, and general relaxation.

Nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers are drawn to the park's rich biodiversity. The lake attracts 65 different bird species and serves as a stopover on the "migratory superhighway" from Alaska to South America. Visitors may also spot Western Pond turtles, Pacific chorus frogs, and various native plant species around the lake.

The park is accessible via the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, a 2.7-mile route that connects Mountain Lake to the Golden Gate Bridge, offering visitors a chance to explore the area's natural beauty and historical significance.
