About India Basin Shoreline Park in San Francisco
India Basin Shoreline Park is a waterfront park located in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The park is part of a larger development project that aims to transform the India Basin shoreline into a seamless waterfront park experience.
The park features scenic views of the San Francisco Bay and provides public access to the waterfront. It includes tidal salt marsh and upland habitat that offers food and shelter for various shorebirds and foraging areas for raptors. The natural area within the park comprises approximately 6.2 acres of the entire 11.8-acre park.
India Basin Shoreline Park is undergoing significant renovation as part of a broader initiative to create the India Basin Waterfront Park. This project will combine the existing India Basin Shoreline Park with the neighboring 900 Innes property to form a grand 10-acre waterfront park. The renovation plans include major site regrading to ease steep slopes, allowing for more site access and creating additional opportunities for shoreline habitat.
The park serves as a critical link in the San Francisco Bay Trail, providing continuous shoreline access for pedestrians and cyclists. It offers opportunities for various recreational activities, including trail use, fishing, kayaking, and wildlife observation.
As part of the renovation project, the park will maintain and expand its current active recreational amenities while increasing opportunities for gathering, recreation, and play. The project emphasizes habitat and wetland restoration and enhancement, public access, resiliency to sea level rise, social equity, and waterfront recreation.
