About America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs
America the Beautiful Park is a 16.9-acre public park located in downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. Opened in 2005, the park serves as a central gathering space for the community and offers views of Pikes Peak.
The park's most notable feature is the Julie Penrose Fountain, also known as "Continuum." This impressive 4-story sculptural fountain, designed by David Barber and Bill Burgess, represents the life-giving movement of water between the atmosphere and the earth. The fountain operates seasonally, typically from late May through mid-August, spraying water from 366 jets as it slowly rotates.
America the Beautiful Park includes a children's play area called the Fantasy Playground. This unique playground features interactive art pieces called "Quirks," which were created with input from local elementary school students. The playground offers various play structures, including hammocks, spinner bowls, and turntables.
The park provides access to the Midland Trail and Pikes Peak Greenway Trail, making it a convenient starting point for walks, runs, or bike rides. Paved walking paths within the park offer opportunities for leisurely strolls and exercise.
The park's history is noteworthy. It was built on the site of the former Conejos neighborhood, a small, vibrant working-class community that was predominantly Latino. The neighborhood was razed in the 1990s and early 2000s as part of urban renewal efforts, a decision that remains controversial among some former residents.
America the Beautiful Park hosts various events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and charity fundraisers. Its central location and open spaces make it a popular venue for community gatherings.
