About Schafer Athletic Complex in Lakewood
Schaefer Athletic Complex is a sports facility located in Lakewood, Colorado. The complex serves as a hub for various athletic activities and community events. It is part of the Foothills Park & Recreation District, which manages several parks and recreational facilities in the area.
The main feature of the park is its extensive array of athletic fields, providing ample space for organized sports and casual play. When not in use for scheduled events, these fields offer open areas for general recreation. The complex includes both baseball/softball fields and multi-use fields, accommodating a variety of sports and activities.
In addition to the outdoor facilities, Schaefer Athletic Complex houses indoor amenities such as the Foothills Sports Arena and Foothills Fieldhouse. These indoor spaces allow for year-round sports activities and provide protection from inclement weather.
The park's history dates back to 1972 when the Federal Government dedicated 90 acres of land from the adjacent Federal Correctional Institution to the Foothills Park & Recreation District. Over the years, additional land acquisitions have expanded the complex to its current size. In 1993, the facility was renamed to honor Daniel L. Schaefer, a former member of the Foothills Board of Directors who played a crucial role in the land acquisitions for the Athletic Complex.
Between 2020-2021, the site underwent improvements funded by a voter-approved mill levy from 2017, demonstrating ongoing community support for maintaining and enhancing the facility.
