About Kenilworth-Parkside in Washington

Kenilworth Park is a 700-acre urban park located in the northeastern corner of Washington, D.C., along the eastern bank of the Anacostia River. The park is part of the larger Anacostia Park system and is managed by the National Park Service.

The park consists of two distinct areas: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and Kenilworth Park. The Aquatic Gardens, established in 1938, is renowned for its collection of water lilies and lotuses. It features over 45 ponds filled with a variety of aquatic plants, making it the only National Park Service site devoted to the cultivation of water-loving plants.

Kenilworth Park itself offers expansive grassy fields that provide habitat for various bird species and serve as a popular spot for recreational activities. The park includes walking trails, including a section of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, which allows visitors to explore the natural surroundings and observe local wildlife.

The area has a rich history, dating back to its use by Native American tribes. In the 20th century, part of the land was used as a landfill before being converted into parkland. Today, ongoing environmental restoration efforts aim to improve the park's ecology and enhance its value as an urban green space.

Visitors to Kenilworth Park can enjoy activities such as bird watching, photography, and leisurely walks. The park provides a unique opportunity to experience nature within the urban environment of Washington, D.C., offering scenic views of the Anacostia River and serving as an important ecological resource for the city.
