About Rotary Park Environmental Center in Cape Coral
Rotary Park in Cape Coral, Florida is a 97-acre natural preserve that offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Florida's native ecosystems. The park, which opened to the public in 2001, is the result of a collaborative effort between local Rotary Clubs, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the City of Cape Coral.
The park's landscape is primarily composed of salt marsh and upland areas, with a significant portion dedicated to preserving the natural environment. Visitors can explore the park's rugged trails that wind through these diverse habitats, offering chances to observe local wildlife such as gopher tortoises, alligators, and a variety of wading and migratory birds.
At the heart of Rotary Park is a 4,200 square foot environmental center that serves as an educational hub. The center hosts various programs and classes related to nature, gardening, and wildlife. It's also home to several small animals, including snakes, lizards, turtles, and fish, many of which were former pets surrendered by their owners.
One of the park's notable features is the Tom Allen Memorial Butterfly House, where visitors can observe and learn about local butterfly species. Free guided tours of the butterfly house are offered several times a week, providing an up-close look at these delicate creatures and the plants that support them.
For those seeking recreational activities, Rotary Park offers a playground, outdoor exercise equipment, and a dog park. The Liam J. Perk Playground provides a safe and fun environment for children, while fitness enthusiasts can take advantage of the exercise stations scattered throughout the park.
Rotary Park also includes Glover Bight, a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that stretches for 3/10 of a mile through mangrove wetlands. This trail ends at an area of oyster bars and shallow flats, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching, especially during low tide.
Throughout the year, Rotary Park hosts various events and activities, including the annual Burrowing Owl Festival, native plant sales, and educational programs about local wildlife and ecosystems. These events further the park's mission of environmental education and community engagement.
