About Monkey Business Park in Tallahassee
Lake Monkey Business Park is a private recreational area located in northern Leon County, Florida, within the planned community of Killearn Lakes Plantation. The park is centered around Lake Monkey Business, a 39-acre man-made lake created in the early to mid-1950s by Julian C. "Bull" Headley as part of the former Bull Run Plantation.
The lake and surrounding park are not open to the general public, but are exclusively accessible to residents of Killearn Lakes Plantation. Access is provided through a gated entrance, which requires a key that can be purchased from the homeowners association office.
Lake Monkey Business is known for its fishing opportunities, supporting populations of largemouth bass, various species of panfish, and catfish. The lake's water typically has a green tint due to photosynthetic plankton, and the lake bottom is characterized by small branches and trees, partly due to beaver activity.
The park features a boat ramp for small watercraft, though no motorized boats are allowed on the lake. Several docks are available for fishing or simply enjoying the scenery. The park area includes a grassy isthmus with ample shade provided by Spanish moss-draped live oak trees, creating a picturesque setting for picnics and relaxation.
While swimming is not permitted due to the presence of alligators and occasional plankton blooms, the park offers other recreational opportunities. In the past, it was a site for community events, including an annual fireworks display on July 4th, though this tradition was suspended in recent years due to financial constraints.
