About Purity Springs Park in Tampa
Purity Springs Park is a small 1.15-acre urban park located in Tampa, Florida. The park's centerpiece is a natural spring that forms a small, clear blue pool approximately 7-8 yards across and about 3 feet deep. The spring's waters flow into a short sandy run before entering the Hillsborough River through a culvert.
Originally the site of the Purity Springs Water Company in the early 20th century, the spring once supplied drinking water to nearby neighborhoods and even ships docked at the port. The City of Tampa purchased the spring in 1961, and it gradually transformed into a public park.
Situated along North River Shore Drive, Purity Springs Park offers a quiet retreat in an urban setting. The park features grassy slopes leading down to the spring, providing visitors with an opportunity to observe the clear waters. Mature oak trees surround the area, casting cool shadows and creating a serene atmosphere.
The park is currently undergoing a restoration project led by the City of Tampa. This effort aims to enhance the spring run, stabilize the basin, and create a living shoreline along the Hillsborough River. The restoration is expected to improve water quality, expand native vegetation, enhance wildlife habitat, and mitigate storm impacts.
While swimming is not permitted in the spring due to potential contamination concerns, Purity Springs Park remains a popular spot for picnics, nature observation, and as a peaceful urban oasis.
