About Ben Burton Park in Athens
Ben Burton Park is a 32-acre wildlife preserve located off Mitchell Bridge Road in Athens, Georgia. The park is operated by the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department and offers visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
The site was formerly home to a hydroelectric generating station, built in 1896 and operated until 1964. In 1967, Georgia Power donated the land to the county, and in October 1971, the park was dedicated in honor of Ben W. Burton, a former Vice President of Georgia Power.
Ben Burton Park features a 1.4-mile pedestrian trail that winds through upland forest and along the Middle Oconee River. Visitors can follow the orange blazes to enjoy the scenic beauty of the park. The trail's mineral surface makes it suitable for various activities, including walking, jogging, and nature observation.
The park serves as an important environmental area, with a portion dedicated to a streambank stabilization project aimed at improving the health of the waterway and reducing erosion. This focus on conservation contributes to the park's role as a wildlife preserve.
For water enthusiasts, Ben Burton Park provides access to the Middle Oconee River. A boat launch is available for small watercraft such as canoes, kayaks, and inflatables, allowing visitors to explore the river while adhering to Georgia's boating regulations. Fishing is also permitted along the river, provided anglers follow state freshwater fishing regulations and possess a valid Georgia Department of Natural Resources fishing license.
The park offers several amenities for picnicking and relaxation, with multiple picnic tables spread across the open spaces. Visitors are reminded that fires are only allowed in the provided charcoal grill to ensure safety and preserve the natural environment.
Dogs are welcome at Ben Burton Park, but they must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under control at all times, in compliance with local ordinances. This policy helps maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all park users while protecting the wildlife and natural habitats within the preserve.
