About Boulevard Woods in Athens
Boulevard Woods Park is a small neighborhood park located in Athens, Georgia. Officially opened in February 2016, this passive green space spans 1.8 acres at the top of Boulevard, serving as a focal point for the surrounding community.
The park features a compact paved walking loop that winds through the property, offering visitors a convenient path for leisurely strolls or light exercise. A walking trail extends into the wooded area, allowing park-goers to immerse themselves in nature. An open lawn area provides space for various activities and relaxation.
Seating walls built along the walking loop offer resting spots and vantage points to observe the wooded back portion of the park. For families with children, a small nature-inspired playground is available. The park also includes an amphitheater, suitable for small gatherings or informal performances.
Boulevard Woods Park has an interesting history. The land was originally donated to the former City of Athens by W.H. Benson in 1967 but remained vacant and unused for decades. The park's creation was a community-driven effort, involving local residents, the Boulevard Neighborhood Association, Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services, Athens Land Trust, and other partners.
The park's design process began in 2009 with community surveys and input, resulting in a concept plan that was approved by the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission. This collaborative approach ensured that the park would meet the needs and preferences of the local residents it serves.
