About Hanna Park in Fort Wayne
Hanna Homestead Park, located at the intersection of Gay Street and Lewis Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a small yet inviting community space spanning 2.5 acres. Managed by Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation, the park's history is deeply rooted in the legacy of Samuel Hanna, one of Fort Wayne’s founders. Originally the site of a homestead built in 1839, the historic house served various roles, including a home for children with disabilities, before it was demolished in 1962. The land, donated by the Hanna family and later transferred to the Parks Department in 1966, was developed into a park to honor this local heritage.
Today, Hanna Homestead Park offers visitors a variety of recreational activities. The park features a well-maintained paved walking path that loops around its perimeter, providing an excellent setting for casual strolls or exercise. For sports enthusiasts, there is a basketball court complete with bleachers and benches, as well as a baseball field, both of which cater to community games and gatherings. Families and children can enjoy the two playground sets and a swing set, making it a suitable destination for younger visitors.
The park's modest size and accessibility make it an integral part of the neighborhood. It serves as a peaceful retreat with green spaces and amenities designed to foster community interaction and outdoor enjoyment. Although small in scale, Hanna Homestead Park is a cherished location for residents, blending historical significance with recreational convenience.
