About Little Turtle Memorial in Fort Wayne
Little Turtle Memorial is a small park located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, dedicated to the memory of Chief Little Turtle, a prominent Miami leader. The park spans just 0.13 acres and is situated east of Spy Run Avenue at Lawton Place. It was established in 1959 when Mary Catherine Smeltzly, a retired history teacher, donated the land to create a memorial for Chief Little Turtle.
The park's primary significance lies in its historical importance as the final resting place of Chief Little Turtle. His grave was discovered in 1912 during the construction of a house in the area. A grave marker was dedicated on June 13, 1960, to commemorate the site.
Little Turtle Memorial serves as a quiet respite in a busy city, befitting the legacy of a man who dedicated himself to peace. The park provides a space for reflection and historical education, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the life and contributions of Chief Little Turtle to the region's history.
The park is open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, allowing visitors ample time to explore and pay their respects. Its small size and focused purpose make it a unique addition to Fort Wayne's park system, emphasizing the importance of preserving local history and honoring indigenous leaders.
