About Franke Park in Fort Wayne
Franke Park, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is one of the city’s largest and most popular parks, encompassing 339.4 acres of natural and recreational spaces. Established in 1921, the park was initially an 80-acre donation from John B. Franke, intended to preserve the area's natural beauty for public enjoyment. Over the years, it has grown significantly, offering an expansive range of amenities and activities for visitors.
The park features a diverse landscape that includes wooded trails, open green spaces, and water bodies such as Shoaff Lake. This variety makes it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy walking, jogging, biking, or simply relaxing in nature. Hiking and mountain biking trails wind through picturesque woodlands, while fishing is permitted at the serene Shoaff Lake, which is home to various fish and bird species.
Franke Park is also home to the renowned Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, a top-rated regional attraction. Families flock to the park for its playgrounds, picnic areas, and the beloved Franke Park Day Camp, which has provided nature education and outdoor activities for children since 1946. The camp emphasizes learning through cooperation, problem-solving, and enjoying the outdoors.
One of the park's cultural highlights is the Foellinger Outdoor Theatre, constructed in 1949. This open-air venue hosts concerts and performances, offering an informal community gathering space set amidst the park's natural backdrop. The theater has been continually updated and remains a popular spot for seasonal entertainment.
Ongoing improvements under the Franke Park Renaissance plan are enhancing access and facilities. Recent updates include a new entrance, a bridge over Spy Run Creek, additional parking, and upgraded trails. New amenities such as a pavilion with a 400-person capacity, playgrounds, and improved connectivity reflect the park’s modern vision while maintaining its historic charm.
