Pogue's Run Art and Nature Park

Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park, located on the east side of Indianapolis at 2300 Dequincy Street, is a unique green space that combines natural beauty with public art. The park spans approximately 43 acres, featuring wetlands, walking trails, and artistic installations. It plays a dual role as a recreational area and a critical infrastructure component for flood control. Initially developed as part of a flood management project in the mid-1990s, the park includes a 22.5-acre flood basin designed to hold massive quantities of water during heavy rainfall, protecting downtown Indianapolis from potential floods.

Visitors can enjoy a relatively flat 1.5-mile trail loop that meanders through the park’s diverse landscapes, including constructed wetlands and open water. The park is also a bird sanctuary, providing a habitat for a variety of species such as ducks, geese, hawks, herons, and egrets. Beyond its natural offerings, the park showcases numerous public art installations. Many of these pieces were created by local artists and students from the Herron School of Art and Design, adding an element of creativity to the outdoor experience.

Pogue’s Run Art and Nature Park is part of a more extensive greenway system, connecting to the 5.3-mile Pogue’s Run Trail. This trail not only enhances connectivity within Indianapolis but also passes through nearby historic neighborhoods and other parks, offering a mix of cultural and ecological experiences. Despite its urban setting, bordered by railroads and highways, the park provides a serene escape for hiking, birdwatching, and appreciating public art.
