Ellenberger Park

Ellenberger Park is a 42-acre community park located in the historic Irvington neighborhood on the eastside of Indianapolis, Indiana. Established in 1903, the park features gently rolling landscape and mature trees, offering a blend of natural beauty and recreational facilities.

The park's history dates back to the late 19th century when John Ellenberger, a local farmer, allowed Irvington residents to use his wooded property as an informal recreation site. In 1909, the city of Indianapolis purchased 32 acres of this land, with additional acquisitions in 1911 and 1915 bringing the park to its current size.

Renowned urban planner and landscape architect George Edward Kessler was involved in the park's early development. Kessler aimed to preserve the site's natural beauty, maintaining woodland paths and the park's primitive design. Pleasant Run creek forms the southern border of the park, adding to its scenic appeal.

Over the years, Ellenberger Park has evolved to include various recreational facilities while maintaining its natural charm. The park hosts community events, including the popular Irvington Farmers Market on select Sundays during warmer months, featuring over 70 local vendors.
