About Chinquapin Run Park in Baltimore
Chinquapin Run Park is a 76-acre linear park located in northeast Baltimore, Maryland. The park stretches for approximately two miles, following the serpentine course of Chinquapin Run, a stream that flows southeasterly through the area. The park serves as an important environmental asset, acting as a major tributary to the Herring Run and forming part of the Back River Watershed.
The park is situated just below the city limits, close to Towson, and is bordered by several neighborhoods including Glen Oaks, Chinquapin-Belvedere, and Lake Walker. It extends from Northern Parkway in the north to Perring Parkway and Morgan State University in the south.
Chinquapin Run Park features a mix of natural green spaces and recreational areas. The park's landscape is characterized by rolling, open spaces, dense tree cover, and rich natural foliage along the riparian curvature of the stream. This environment provides habitat for various plant and animal species, making it an excellent location for nature observation and photography, particularly during the fall when the changing colors of leaves offer picturesque views.
The park offers a variety of activities for visitors. While most of the park consists of narrow green spaces and pathways following the stream, there are several recreational facilities concentrated at the northern end near Northern Parkway and Chinquapin Parkway. These amenities cater to different interests and age groups, providing opportunities for both active recreation and passive enjoyment of nature.
In recent years, Chinquapin Run Park has undergone significant changes due to a large stream restoration project along Chinquapin Run. This project has impacted the usability of some areas of the park, particularly those following the stream. As of 2025, efforts are underway to revitalize the park, including plans to construct a 1.8-mile walking and biking trail. This new trail is intended to provide crucial pedestrian and bicycling connections between Morgan State University, Lake Montebello, Herring Run Park, and northeast Baltimore neighborhoods.
The park serves as an important green space for the surrounding communities, offering a natural retreat within the urban environment of Baltimore. It provides opportunities for various outdoor activities, from casual walks and picnics to more structured recreational pursuits, making it a valuable resource for local residents and visitors alike.
