About Dewees Park in Baltimore

Dewees Park is an 18-acre green space located in the Mid-Govans neighborhood on the northeast side of Baltimore, Maryland. The park is surrounded by a series of row houses and named after Walter J. Dewees, a long-time Govans resident and former City Councilman.

The park features a variety of recreational facilities and natural spaces. It includes two full-sized basketball courts, a large urban garden, a small recreation center, a playground, a football field with goalposts, and two baseball fields. There are also several oddly positioned fields that could be used for small gatherings.

Dewees Park has three major access points. The most accessible entrance is at the southeast section of the park at Woodbourne Avenue and Lothian Road, where decent street parking can be found. Another major access point is at the Dewees Recreation Center near Ivanhoe Road, which is located near the middle of the park. The third access point is in the northeast corner of the park at Harwood Avenue and Alhambra Avenue, convenient for accessing the ball fields.

On the southern edge of the park, just off Woodbourne Road, there is a large urban farm where community members can rent small plots of land to plant vegetables or flowers. This farm is one of the larger urban farms in Baltimore, covering about an acre of plots.

In 2014, the City adopted the Dewees Park Conceptual Master Plan, which made several recommendations for improvements. These included adding walking trails with fitness stations, a pavilion, and a spray park for children. However, the park has been noted to have potential for better serving the surrounding community.
