Mclaughlin Playground

McLaughlin Playground, located in the Roxbury Crossing area of Boston, Massachusetts, is a city park that has been serving the community since 1912. The park is situated on Parker Hill Avenue and spans multiple terraced levels, offering a variety of recreational spaces for visitors of all ages.

The playground's layout consists of five tiers, each serving a different purpose. The top tier, known as Parker hilltop, offers scenic views of the surrounding area. The fourth tier has been used for various purposes over the years, including tennis courts and even as a parking lot for the New England Baptist Hospital. The third tier features basketball courts and a tot lot for younger children. The second and largest tier contains a softball field and a running track, while the first tier is home to the Mission Hill Little League field.

One of the unique features of McLaughlin Playground is its connection to local history. The woodland area within the park includes at least 20 mature apple trees, some of which are estimated to be between 30 and 100 years old. These trees are descendants of the colonial orchard that once belonged to Peter Parker, adding a touch of historical significance to the park.

In recent years, efforts have been made to enhance the natural aspects of the park. The McLaughlin Woodlands & Orchard area has seen the planting of new trees in a maple grove, and there are ongoing initiatives to create pollinator meadows. These efforts contribute to the park's role as an urban green space and support local biodiversity.
