About Lynn Common in Lynn
Lynn Common is a historic park located in the heart of Lynn, Massachusetts. Established in 1637, it is one of the oldest public spaces in the United States. The common spans approximately 10 acres and has a unique shape resembling the sole of a shoe, a nod to Lynn's history as a major center for shoe manufacturing in the 19th century.
The park has undergone several transformations over the centuries. In the 1820s, significant improvements were made, including the creation of North and South Common Streets which now flank the elongated grassy area. The common is divided into several sections by small cross streets.
Lynn Common features a number of historical elements. A cast-iron fence, dating from around 1870, borders the park. Other notable structures include a Civil War monument added in 1873, a fountain installed in 1893, and a bandstand that was in place by 1900.
In recent years, efforts have been made to update and improve the park. A master plan developed for Lynn Common recommended the addition of a walking loop with mile markers and LED lights. The plan also called for the rehabilitation of the bandstand, fountain, and comfort station.
The common is surrounded by several significant buildings, including churches and civic structures. It serves as a central gathering place for the community and hosts various events throughout the year.
