About Flat Branch Park in Columbia
Flat Branch Park is a 2.8-acre urban park located in downtown Columbia, Missouri. The park runs along Flat Branch Creek and extends across two city blocks, from 4th Street to Providence Road. It serves as a trailhead for the MKT Trail, which connects to the statewide Katy Trail system.
Established on a formerly blighted industrial site, Flat Branch Park was developed in two phases, with the first section opening in 2001 and the second in 2007. The park's creation involved extensive environmental cleanup and stream restoration efforts to transform the area into a vibrant community space.
The park features a blend of natural and recreational elements. Visitors can enjoy the restored Flat Branch Creek, which flows through the park, as well as green spaces and native plantings. For families, the park offers a playground and a popular sprayground where children can cool off during warm months.
Historical elements are incorporated throughout the park, with five plaques providing information about the area's past. Public art is also present, including the "Marathoners" sculpture by Larry Young. The park's gazebo and amphitheater serve as gathering spaces for community events and performances.
Flat Branch Park provides connectivity to the surrounding area, with a pedestrian bridge offering access to the nearby Convention and Visitors Bureau. The park's central location and amenities make it a popular spot for both local residents and visitors to downtown Columbia.
