Peace Park

Peace Park, located on the northern edge of the University of Missouri (MU) campus in Columbia, Missouri, is an iconic green space officially named McAlester Park. Adjacent to McAlester Hall, this verdant area is steeped in history and shaped by a commitment to peace and community. The park earned its moniker "Peace Park" after the Kent State Massacre on May 4, 1970, and features a memorial honoring the victims. It has since been a gathering place for both solemn reflection and spirited activism, serving as a site for peaceful protests, yearly Earth Day festivals, and community events.

Goose Creek meanders through the park, forming a scenic water feature that enhances its tranquil atmosphere. A stone bridge over the creek has become central to campus lore, with a legend suggesting couples who cross it together are destined to marry. The park is also part of the Mizzou Botanic Garden, hosting a wide array of trees, including a designated arboretum with over 100 trees spanning 43 species. These elements provide an excellent example of Mid-Missouri's flora and contribute to the park's role as a hub for environmental education.
