About Murphy Park in St Louis
Murphy Park is a 10.1-acre urban park located in the Carr Square Neighborhood just north of Downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1962, it is one of 108 parks in the city, contributing to St. Louis' total of 2,956 acres of parkland.
The park is bordered by Hogan Street to the east, Murphy Park Drive to the north, Phipps Street to the west, and Jefferson Elementary School to the south. Its design is characteristic of mid-century urban parks, featuring extensive concrete elements that create a distinctly urban atmosphere.
Murphy Park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors. It includes a stone and concrete stage, playgrounds for different age groups, tennis courts, basketball courts, and horseshoe pits. In 2007, a baseball field was added to the park, built by Cardinals Care and dedicated to Lou Brock, a beloved St. Louis Cardinals player.
The park's setting is notable, with the beautiful St. Stanislaus Kostka church, the mid-century Jefferson School, and the smokestack of the former Falstaff plant (now converted into apartments) visible from within the park.
While the park provides valuable recreational space for the neighborhood, it has faced challenges with maintenance and community engagement. Some facilities, such as slides and basketball rims, have been reported as needing repairs or replacements.
