About Barbara Bennett Park in Reno
Barbara Bennett Park is a 3-acre urban park located along the Truckee River near downtown Reno, Nevada. The park's origins date back to the early days of Reno, with portions of the land belonging to Wynn Lake in 1865 and the Central Pacific Railroad in 1876. In 1906, the City of Reno purchased the land and established it as Riverside Park, which became a popular spot for concerts, dances, and picnics.
The park was renamed in 1995 to honor Barbara Bennett, Reno's first female mayor who served from 1979 to 1983. Bennett was instrumental in passing a construction tax that has helped fund many parks in Reno.
Barbara Bennett Park offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city life, featuring lush greenery and well-maintained grounds. The park's location along the Truckee River provides scenic views and opportunities for riverside activities. Its grassy areas and shade trees make it an ideal spot for relaxation and picnics.
Over the years, the park has undergone several improvements. Tennis courts were added in the 1920s and 1930s, and in the 1980s, the current amenities, including the playground, tennis and basketball courts, and restroom facilities, were significantly upgraded.
In 1998, the park became home to murals painted by 30 young artists as part of a project organized by Youth Artworks. These murals add a unique artistic element to the park's visual appeal.
Barbara Bennett Park serves as a popular recreational space for both residents and visitors, offering various activities and a pleasant environment in the heart of Reno.
