About Powning Park in Reno

Powning Park, also known as Powning Veterans Memorial Park, is a small 0.27-acre park located in downtown Reno, Nevada. The park has historical significance as one of Reno's oldest parks, originally established in the late 19th century.

Despite its compact size, Powning Park serves as an important memorial space honoring veterans. The park features several monuments and displays related to military service. These include a statue of Major General Jesse Lee Reno, for whom the city of Reno is named, as well as flags representing different branches of the U.S. military.

Other notable elements in the park are the ship's bell from the USS Reno, a World War II light cruiser, and a memorial dedicated to Nevada soldiers who fell during the War on Terror. The park also contains a "Freedom Flame" monument.

Powning Park provides a small pocket of green space amid the urban landscape of downtown Reno. Its central location near businesses and civic buildings makes it easily accessible to visitors and locals alike. While modest in scale, the park plays an outsized role in preserving local history and honoring military service members.
