About Idlewild Park in Reno
Idlewild Park is a large 49-acre community park located close to downtown Reno, Nevada, situated along the Truckee River. Established in the 1920s, the park has a rich history tied to the development of transcontinental highways in the United States.
The park features a picturesque landscape with duck ponds, a one-acre rose garden, and open green spaces. The rose garden, established in 1958, hosts over 200 varieties of roses and more than 1,750 individual plants. It is the only rose garden in Nevada certified by the American Rose Society.
Idlewild Park is home to the historic California Building, constructed for the 1927 Transcontinental Highway Exposition. This Mission Revival-style structure, now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a reminder of Reno's role in early transcontinental highway development.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors of all ages. It includes multiple playgrounds, sports fields, and a skate park. The Truckee River, which runs alongside the park, provides a scenic backdrop and opportunities for activities such as fishing or simply enjoying nature.
Idlewild Park hosts several community events throughout the year, including the annual Reno Earth Day celebration and food truck events during the summer months. Its location and diverse offerings make it a popular destination for both local residents and visitors to Reno.
