About Riverview Park in Jersey City
Riverview-Fisk Park is a public park located in Jersey City, New Jersey, situated in the Heights neighborhood. The park offers panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, Hudson River, and the Verrazano Bridge, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
Originally established in the early 20th century, Riverview-Fisk Park has undergone several renovations and improvements over the years. In 2024, the park received a significant upgrade with the addition of a new multi-purpose turf field, measuring 130 feet by 87 feet. This field replaced a previously patchy grass area, providing a more versatile space for various sports and activities.
The park features a gazebo that was rebuilt in 2017 after the previous structure was damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The new gazebo includes modern amenities such as lighting, storage, and restrooms. It also incorporates a bioswale garden designed to absorb stormwater runoff and mitigate hillside erosion. The gazebo was later named in honor of Maria Tuzzo, a longtime resident and community volunteer.
Riverview-Fisk Park is known for its community events, including a farmers market and the Riverview Jazz Festival. The park's location and amenities make it a popular gathering place for various activities throughout the year, from casual picnics to organized sports.
The park's history is commemorated through several monuments, including one dedicated to World War I veterans from the Heights neighborhood. In 1947, the park was renamed to honor Captain Clinton E. Fisk, who was killed in action in France in 1918.
Riverview-Fisk Park continues to be an important green space in Jersey City, offering recreational opportunities and serving as a community hub for residents of the Heights and surrounding areas.
