About Vailsburg Park in Newark
Vailsburg Park is a mid-sized urban park located in the Vailsburg section of Newark, New Jersey. Spanning 30.32 acres, it is the tenth largest park in the Essex County park system. The park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, renowned landscape architects, and features a landscape that provides a sense of spaciousness within a densely populated neighborhood.
Originally constructed in 1917, Vailsburg Park underwent major improvements in the late 1920s. The park's history includes periods when it was used by the U.S. Army for training, embarking, and recruiting during World Wars I and II. In 1952, a portion of the park was leased to the U.S. Army for an anti-aircraft gun site, which was vacated in 1960.
Vailsburg Park serves as a recreational hub for local residents, offering a variety of athletic facilities and leisure spaces. The park's layout includes broad lawns that contribute to its spacious feel, while large trees line the perimeter, surrounding the various recreational areas.
In recent years, Vailsburg Park has undergone renovations to improve its facilities. In 2019, the park received updates including a new playground, renovated restrooms, and improvements to the basketball court.
