About Ivy Hill Park in Newark
Ivy Hill Park is a neighborhood park located in Newark, New Jersey. Spanning 18.96 acres, it sits on the border between Newark and South Orange, adjacent to Seton Hall University. The park was established in 1927 when the Essex County Parks Commission purchased the land from the City of Newark to meet the recreational needs of the rapidly growing sections of Maplewood, Newark, South Orange, and Irvington.
Designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers firm, Ivy Hill Park features a mix of recreational facilities and green spaces. The park's development was gradual, with improvements made over the years, including work done by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.
One of the park's distinguishing features is its ten hard surface tennis courts, six of which are on land leased from Seton Hall University under a 1986 agreement. This arrangement allows the university use of the park's facilities in exchange for the county's rehabilitation of the courts.
Ivy Hill Park serves as a vital community space, hosting various sporting activities and providing recreational opportunities for residents of the surrounding areas. Its proximity to high-rise apartments, Seton Hall University, and private housing units makes it a popular destination for diverse groups of people, from students to families and retirees.
The park also includes several fields for different sports, a playground, and areas for relaxation and community gatherings. Its design and facilities make it a versatile space that caters to a wide range of recreational needs, embodying the Olmsted Brothers' philosophy of creating accessible and functional public spaces.
