About Romare Bearden Park in Charlotte
Romare Bearden Park is a 5.4-acre public park located in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. Opened in 2013, the park is named after Romare Bearden, a renowned African American artist born in Charlotte in 1911. The park's design draws inspiration from Bearden's collages and paintings, as interpreted by supervising artist Norie Sato.
The park occupies an entire city block in Uptown Charlotte and is conveniently located across from Truist Field, home of the Charlotte Knights baseball team. Its central location makes it easily accessible and a popular destination for both residents and visitors.
The park features several distinct areas, each reflecting aspects of Bearden's life and artistic career. These include two gardens named Madeline and Maudell, inspired by gardens that influenced Bearden's artwork. The park also boasts a formal event space known as the Big Moon Green, which transitions into an open area for informal activities and structured events.
Throughout the year, Romare Bearden Park hosts a variety of programs and events, including fitness classes, cultural arts programs, and live music performances. The park's design incorporates elements that encourage both active and passive recreation, making it a versatile space for the community.
One of the park's most striking features is its water elements, including cascading waterfalls and a fountain plaza. These not only add visual interest but also provide a cooling effect during warm weather. The park also includes artistic elements such as sculptures and installations that pay homage to Bearden's artistic legacy.
