Belmont Park

Belmont Park, located in Durham, North Carolina, underwent a significant renovation in 2021 as part of Durham's Participatory Budget (PB) Improvement Projects. The park's transformation was the result of community input and collaboration, focusing on creating both active and passive recreational spaces.

The main feature of Belmont Park is its bicycle pump track, which includes a looped circuit of hills, berms, and banked turns. This track is designed to be ridden using an "arm-pumping" motion to generate momentum instead of pedaling, providing a unique cycling experience for visitors. Adjacent to the pump track is a strider bike track, specifically designed to help young children learn balance and coordination before transitioning to pedaling.

In addition to the cycling features, Belmont Park boasts several environmentally friendly enhancements. These include improved pedestrian access for better street visibility, a natural surface walking path, cedar benches, and native landscaping under large oak shade trees. The park also features a refurbished cedar top picnic table, offering visitors a spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

A notable artistic element of the park is the Belmont Park Dragon, a public art sculpture with interactive elements. This collaborative piece, designed and installed by Red Rabbit Wood Carving and Nature Trails NC, LLC, engages visitors both visually and physically, adding a unique aesthetic touch to the park.

Belmont Park's renovation has transformed it into a family-friendly space that combines active recreation with passive enjoyment, reflecting the community's desires and providing a valuable outdoor resource for Durham residents.
