About Historic Oakview in Raleigh
Historic Oak View County Park is a 19th-century farmstead located in southeast Raleigh, North Carolina. The 27-acre park preserves and interprets North Carolina's agricultural heritage and rural history through its historic buildings, educational programs, and exhibits.
The centerpiece of the park is the Greek Revival-style farmhouse built in 1855. Other historic structures on the property include a detached kitchen dating to the 1820s, a cotton gin house from around 1900, a livestock barn, carriage house, and tenant house. These buildings have been preserved to demonstrate farm life in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Visitors can explore the grounds and tour the historic buildings to learn about farming practices, cotton production, and rural living from the antebellum period through the early 1900s. The Farm History Center provides an overview of North Carolina's agricultural history and features interactive exhibits.
The park grounds include nature trails through wooded areas, a pecan grove, herb garden, and small cotton field. There are also picnic facilities and a playground for children. Educational programs, special events, and guided tours are offered throughout the year to provide hands-on learning experiences about the site's history.
As a working farm in the past, Historic Oak View gives visitors a glimpse into North Carolina's agricultural roots and the daily lives of those who lived and worked on farms in previous centuries. The preserved buildings and landscapes allow guests to step back in time and experience an important part of the state's rural heritage.
