About Mordecai Historic Park in Raleigh
Mordecai Historic Park is a historical landmark located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Established in 1785, the park is centered around the Mordecai House, which is the oldest residence in Raleigh still on its original foundation. The house was originally built by Joel Lane for his son Henry and daughter-in-law Polly, and later became the property of Moses Mordecai through marriage.
The park spans 3.9 acres and features several historic buildings in addition to the main house. These include the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, which was moved to the site. Other notable structures are the Ellen Mordecai Garden, the Badger-Iredell Law Office, Allen Kitchen, and St. Mark's Chapel.
Visitors to Mordecai Historic Park can take guided tours of the Mordecai House to learn about its history and see original furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The park also offers educational programs and living history demonstrations to provide insight into life in Raleigh during the plantation era. Additionally, the park hosts special events throughout the year, including historic trolley tours of Raleigh on Saturdays from March through December.
