About Scioto Audubon Metro Park in Columbus
Scioto Audubon Metro Park is a 120-acre urban oasis located along the Scioto River just south of downtown Columbus, Ohio. The park opened in 2009 after extensive restoration of what was formerly an industrial area dominated by factories, warehouses and railroad yards.
The park features diverse natural habitats including wetlands, prairies, and woodlands that provide a sanctuary for wildlife, especially birds. As part of the Scioto Mile network of parks, it offers expansive views of the Columbus skyline while allowing visitors to connect with nature in the heart of the city.
One of the park's most distinctive features is its 35-foot tall outdoor climbing wall, which is one of the largest free outdoor climbing walls in the United States. The climbing complex includes three towers and two arches spanning over 7,000 square feet, with opportunities for bouldering, top rope climbing, and lead climbing.
The park serves as an important stopover for migratory birds traveling between Central/South America and northern breeding grounds. Thousands of birds from over 200 species have been observed utilizing the park's habitats during spring and fall migrations. This rich avian diversity has earned Scioto Audubon designation as an Important Bird Area by Audubon and BirdLife International.
Educational programming is offered through the on-site Grange Insurance Audubon Center, which provides nature education for Columbus residents and schools. The 18,000-square-foot center is designed as a model for sustainable building practices.
Scioto Audubon Metro Park caters to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts with its extensive trail system, boat launch on the Scioto River, fishing access, dog park, and various recreational facilities. The park aims to balance conservation efforts with providing urban residents opportunities for outdoor recreation and environmental education.
