The Gathering Place

Gathering Place is a 66.5-acre public park located along the Arkansas River in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Opened on September 8, 2018, it was created through a collaboration between the George Kaiser Family Foundation and numerous corporate and philanthropic organizations. The park was designed by renowned landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh with input from the Tulsa community.

The park features a diverse range of landscapes and ecosystems, including over 6,000 trees, three acres of water features, and 11 distinct ecosystems. Its topography helps structure the site into various spaces that support different activities and experiences. The park's design emphasizes sustainability, incorporating native landscaping, habitat restoration, and energy-efficient lighting.

Gathering Place offers numerous attractions for visitors of all ages. The Chapman Adventure Playground, spanning 5 acres, provides a complex environment for imaginative and tactile play. The park also includes sports facilities, dining options, and venues for diverse programming and entertainment. Many of these attractions are free to access, aligning with the park's mission to be an inclusive space for all community members.

The park hosts various educational programs and activities, including explorer packs for hands-on learning, guided tours, and field trips. It also features several art installations throughout its grounds. Gathering Place has received numerous accolades since its opening, including being named the Best City Park in the United States by USA Today readers in 2021 and 2024.

Gathering Place represents a significant investment in public space, with its $465 million cost representing the largest private gift to a community park in U.S. history. The park aims to serve as a cornerstone for Tulsa's community, fostering social interaction and promoting inclusivity across diverse demographics.
