About Columbia Park in Bend
Columbia Park is a public recreational area located along the western edge of the Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon. The park consists of two distinct shelves, offering visitors different perspectives and experiences of the surrounding landscape.
The upper shelf of Columbia Park features a large grassy lawn area, ideal for picnicking and leisurely activities. This section also includes picnic tables, providing convenient spots for outdoor meals and gatherings. One of the park's most notable features is the playground, which includes the "SS Columbia" ship-like structure. This unique play area, often referred to as the "Pirate Ship Park" by locals, is a favorite among children of all ages.
The lower shelf of the park is home to a trail that runs north and south along the eastern edge of the river. This trail connects to a pedestrian bridge spanning the Deschutes River, offering easy access to other parts of Bend. Benches are strategically placed along this lower section, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy scenic views of the river. For safety reasons, a chain link fence is in place, and the steep drop prohibits direct river access from this area.
Columbia Park has an interesting history, having originally served as a quarry site during the mill days. In 1984, the park was transferred from the City of Bend to the Bend Park & Recreation District. Its development was supported by Land and Water Conservation grants in 1966, 1969, and 1971. More recently, the park's design has been enhanced through grants from the Oregon State Marine Board in 2022 and a Future Fund Grant in 2023.
The park is open daily from 5 am to 10 pm, providing ample opportunity for visitors to enjoy its amenities throughout the day. Street parking is available for those visiting the park. While the park's 2.0 acres may seem modest, its location and features make it a valued recreational space in the Bend community.
