About Scobert Gardens City Park in Eugene
Scobert Gardens is a small neighborhood park located in the Whiteaker area of Eugene, Oregon. Established in 1983 with a Community Development Block Grant and volunteer labor, the park spans 1.2 acres and serves as a local gathering space.
The park features Eugene's first playground with a fully rubberized safety surface, which has proven to be cost-effective, low-maintenance, and safe. This surface is wheelchair-accessible and meets safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials and the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
Scobert Gardens also hosts the Sunday Whiteaker Community Market from May to October, providing a venue for local vendors and community engagement. The park's central location in the Whiteaker neighborhood makes it easily accessible to residents and visitors alike.
In recent years, the park has faced challenges related to illicit activities, prompting community discussions about its future. The City of Eugene is currently engaged in a renovation project for Scobert Gardens, with plans to redesign the space to make it more welcoming and functional for all users. The renovation process, which began in 2023, involves community input and is expected to continue through 2024, with construction planned for 2026.
