About Normandale Park in Portland
Normandale Park is a 13.69-acre public park located in the Rose City Park neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. The park was acquired by the city in 1940, shortly after the closure of Normandale elementary school which previously occupied the site. Development of the park continued through the 1940s, with significant improvements made in 1947.
A central feature of Normandale Park is Erv Lind Stadium, a softball and baseball facility named in 1964 for Erwin "Erv" Lind. Lind coached the renowned Erv Lind Florists women's fast-pitch softball team from 1937 until his death in 1964. The stadium has hosted numerous championship tournaments and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2024, recognizing its significance in women's sports history and as a welcoming space for competitive athletics.
The park includes a popular off-leash dog area, spanning approximately 1.5 acres. This fenced area is divided into three sections, including a dedicated space for small or less active dogs. Within the dog park, visitors can find water supplies for pets and small pools for dogs to cool off on hot days.
Normandale Park offers a variety of recreational facilities for community use. The park features picnic areas, playgrounds, and sports fields available for reservation. Nature trails crisscross the park, providing opportunities for leisurely walks and exploration of the local environment.
In recent years, Normandale Park has been a site of community gatherings and demonstrations. The park continues to serve as an important green space and recreational area for local residents, embodying a rich history of sports, community engagement, and public use.
