Gorgas Park

Gorgas Park is a 20-acre public green space located in the Roxborough neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park serves as a central gathering place for the community, often referred to as "Roxborough's Central Park".

The park has a rich history dating back to its dedication on July 4, 1893. It is named after the Gorgas family, who settled in the area towards the end of the 17th century. In 1853, the Fairmount Park Commission acquired the property, preserving the homestead and barn while removing the mills that had been operated by the family.

After experiencing a period of decline following World War II, Gorgas Park underwent a significant revitalization starting in 1997. The Friends of Gorgas Park (FOGP), a group of dedicated neighborhood volunteers, was established to restore and maintain the park. Their efforts have transformed it into a clean, safe, and vibrant community asset.

Today, Gorgas Park features over 250 trees and award-winning gardens, including pollinator gardens that have received Blue Ribbon Awards from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for four consecutive years. The park hosts various community events throughout the year, such as concerts, movies, festivals, and community cleanups.

The park's layout includes walking paths, green spaces, and recreational facilities. It has become a popular destination for families, featuring an expanded children's play area that was upgraded two years ago.
