About Adamson-Spalding Storybook Garden in Abilene
The Adamson-Spalding Storybook Garden is a unique outdoor space located in Abilene, Texas. Unveiled on June 8, 2017, the garden is situated on the southeast lawn of the Abilene Convention Center. It serves as a cornerstone of Abilene's identity as the Storybook Capital of Texas and America.
The garden features five sets of sculptures depicting iconic characters from beloved children's books illustrated by Garth Williams. These include characters from "Charlotte's Web," "Stuart Little," and the Little Golden Book "Three Bedtime Stories." The sculptures of "The Three Little Pigs," "The Three Little Kittens," and "The Three Bears" are particularly noteworthy.
Designed by landscape architect Mitch Wright, the garden incorporates thoughtful environmental stewardship with high-quality design. It includes various features such as limestone benches engraved with inspiring quotes and bronze storybook images. The garden is illuminated at night, allowing visitors to enjoy the whimsical sculptures and serene atmosphere at any time.
The Adamson-Spalding Storybook Garden is not just a static display; it's an evolving project. New bronze pieces are added to the Storybook Sculpture Project each year during the Children's Art & Literacy Festival, based on the work of the artist on exhibit at the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature in downtown Abilene.
This garden serves as more than just a tourist attraction; it's a celebration of children's literature and a tribute to the power of storytelling. It provides a space where families can engage with literature in a tangible way, encouraging reading and sparking imagination in visitors of all ages.
