About Vera Hall Minter Park in Abilene
Vera Hall Minter Park is a small urban park located in downtown Abilene, Texas, at the corner of North 2nd Street and Cypress Street. The park occupies the site of what was once the Queen Theater, which was demolished in 1974. Following the theater's removal, the Minter family purchased the property, and through community fundraising efforts, the park was developed to honor Vera Hall Minter for her dedicated community work.
The park's centerpiece is a striking water feature - a 16-foot high, 34-foot wide water curtain. This computerized water curtain, believed to be one of the largest outdoor installations of its kind in the United States at the time of its installation, can be programmed to display shapes and words. The water cascades over a limestone backdrop, creating a soothing ambient sound in the heart of the city.
In 2020, Vera Hall Minter Park underwent a significant renovation. The redesign aimed to make the space more accessible and water-efficient while maintaining its restful atmosphere. The updated park features limestone seating areas, providing visitors with comfortable spots to relax and enjoy the urban oasis.
As part of Abilene's Storybook Sculpture Project, the park is home to a bronze statue of Toothiana, Queen of the Tooth Fairy Armies, adding a whimsical touch to the space. The park serves as a peaceful retreat for downtown workers, visitors, and residents, offering a place to take a break, have lunch, or simply enjoy the outdoors in an urban setting.
