About Everman Park in Abilene
Everman Park is a historic public space located in downtown Abilene, Texas. The park has a rich history dating back to 1880 when it served as the site for the original town lot sales that established Abilene. Over the years, Everman Park has evolved from a place where cowboys once raced horses to a modern urban green space.
Officially named in 1914 after John Everman, an officer of the Texas and Pacific Railway, the park underwent significant renovations in the 1990s that revitalized its role in the community. Today, Everman Park spans approximately one acre between Pine Street and Cypress Street on the north side of Abilene, along North First Street.
One of the park's most notable features is its collection of sculptures. In 2012 and 2013, six bronze sculptures depicting characters from Dr. Seuss books were installed, including the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and the Lorax. These whimsical additions have made the park a popular spot for families and photography enthusiasts. The park also houses other sculptures inspired by children's literature, such as "Childhood's Great Adventure" and "The Man in the Moon," both added to honor children's author William Joyce.
Everman Park serves as a central location for community events and gatherings. It features a large fountain that adds to the park's aesthetic appeal and provides a soothing backdrop for visitors. The park's layout includes walking paths, benches, and green spaces that offer a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city.
In 2015, Everman Park played a crucial role in Abilene's designation as the "Storybook Capital of Texas" by the state legislature, highlighting its importance in promoting literacy and the arts. The park continues to be a focal point for the city's cultural initiatives, including the annual Children's Art & Literacy Festival.
