About Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Metropolitan Park in Austin
Auditorium Shores at Town Lake Metropolitan Park is an urban park located in downtown Austin, Texas, along the southern shore of Lady Bird Lake. The park spans approximately 48.58 acres (19.66 ha) and was originally created in 1959. Its name refers to its location between the former Palmer Auditorium and the shores of Lady Bird Lake.
The park offers scenic views of the Austin skyline and serves as a popular recreational area for both locals and visitors. It features expansive grassy areas suitable for various activities such as picnicking, frisbee, and kite flying. The Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail passes through the park, providing opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling.
Auditorium Shores is known for hosting numerous outdoor events, concerts, and festivals throughout the year, including performances during the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. The park's natural amphitheater and open spaces make it an ideal venue for large gatherings and cultural celebrations.
A notable landmark within the park is the Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial statue, dedicated to the legendary blues guitarist and Austin native. The statue is a popular photo spot and serves as a tribute to Austin's rich musical heritage.
In recent years, Auditorium Shores has undergone renovations to enhance its facilities and improve the visitor experience. These improvements include the installation of a new irrigation system, re-graded lawn areas, and high-performance turfgrass.
The park is also dog-friendly, featuring designated off-leash areas where pets can roam and play. However, recent redevelopments have somewhat reduced the space available for off-leash activities.
