About Waterloo Park in Austin
Waterloo Park is an 11-acre urban green space located in downtown Austin, Texas. Reopened in August 2021 after an extensive 10-year redesign and renovation, the park serves as the northern anchor of the Waterloo Greenway, a planned 1.5-mile park system along Waller Creek.
The park features a blend of natural and constructed elements, designed to provide both recreational opportunities and ecological benefits. Extensive native plant gardens showcase the flora of central Texas, attracting butterflies and other pollinators. The landscape includes rolling hills, winding trails, and open lawns, offering visitors diverse spaces to explore and enjoy.
At the heart of Waterloo Park stands the Moody Amphitheater, a 5,000-capacity outdoor venue for concerts and cultural events. The amphitheater's distinctive white lattice shade structure serves as an architectural focal point within the park.
Waterloo Park incorporates sustainable design elements, including rain gardens and bioswales to manage stormwater and protect Waller Creek. The park also preserves and highlights several heritage live oak trees, some over 200 years old, which are showcased on elevated decks to protect their root systems while allowing visitors to enjoy their shade.
Situated between the Texas State Capitol, the Red River Cultural District, and the Dell Medical Complex, Waterloo Park provides a green refuge in Austin's increasingly dense urban core. It offers scenic views of the downtown skyline and serves as a connection point between different areas of the city.
