About Marion Sansom Park in Fort Worth
Marion Sansom Park is a 260-acre natural area located in Fort Worth, Texas. The park sits atop a limestone bluff overlooking the West Fork of the Trinity River and Lake Worth, offering visitors breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The park's origins date back to the late 1800s when banker and rancher Marion Sansom Senior purchased 7,000 acres north of the Trinity River. Today, Marion Sansom Park is what remains of the original ranch, along with nearby Buck Sansom Park.
In 1927, the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the Inspiration Point Shelter House within the park. This rustic-style structure has been a popular spot for picnics and gatherings for generations, providing shade and scenic overlooks. In 2014, the shelter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Marion Sansom Park features diverse terrain, including limestone bluffs, steep topography, and unique prairie habitats. The geology of the area supports endemic plant species like pale-leaf yucca and Engelmann's sage, which are found only in North Central Texas. The park also provides opportunities to observe various bird species, from migratory songbirds to winter waterfowl.
One of the park's main attractions is its network of hiking and mountain biking trails. Thanks to the efforts of the Fort Worth Mountain Bike Association, there are approximately 11 miles of trails ranging from intermediate to expert difficulty. These trails wind through the park's steep hillsides, offering challenging terrain for outdoor enthusiasts.
A notable feature of Marion Sansom Park is its waterfall, which can be reached after a short hike. The park is also one of 21 official canoe launch sites for the Trinity River Paddling Trail, a 130-mile stretch designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2020.
