About Lake Como Park in Fort Worth

Lake Como Park is a historic public park located in Fort Worth, Texas. The park's origins date back to the late 19th century when it was part of a planned residential development called "Chamberlin Arlington Heights." The centerpiece of the park is Lake Como, an artificial lake created in the 1890s as part of the original development plan.

The park covers approximately 72 acres of land, offering a serene and picturesque setting for visitors. It features a mix of open spaces, wooded areas, and the lake itself, providing a diverse natural environment within the urban landscape of Fort Worth.

Lake Como Park has a rich history tied to Fort Worth's African American community. In the early 20th century, as the area around the lake began to develop into an African American neighborhood, the lake and its surroundings became a popular recreational spot for local residents. In 1952, the land was officially given to the city by Amon G. Carter to be used as a public park serving the west side's Black community.

Over the years, the park has undergone various improvements and additions. In 1956, a shelter was constructed in the park, which still stands today as a historic feature. The following year, a swimming pool and bathhouse were added to enhance the recreational offerings.

Today, Lake Como Park continues to serve as an important community space, offering a range of recreational activities and natural beauty for Fort Worth residents and visitors alike. The park provides a peaceful retreat within the city, allowing people to enjoy outdoor activities, observe local wildlife, or simply relax in a natural setting.
