Sylvania Park

Sylvania Park is a community park located in Fort Worth, Texas. Established in 1927, the park spans approximately 26.4 acres and is situated in the Riverside area of east Fort Worth. The park received its name from the nearby post office at the time of its creation.

Sylvania Park is home to the Riverside Community Center, which opened in 1955 as part of the city's initiative to place recreation centers throughout Fort Worth. The community center is nestled within an Eastern Cross Timbers woodland, characterized by post oak trees that may date back to the late 19th century when James Welch purchased the property.

The park features a diverse landscape, including towering post oaks and blackjack oaks typical of the Eastern Cross Timbers ecosystem. A mile-long cement walking trail winds through the park, offering visitors opportunities for exercise and nature observation. The trail is shaded by the park's mature trees, providing a comfortable environment for outdoor activities.

Sylvania Park has undergone several improvements since its inception. During the Great Depression, the park benefited from New Deal funding, which supported various enhancements. In 1939, a swimming pool was added to the park's amenities, further expanding its recreational offerings.

The park's geology consists of terrace deposits, with soils from the Bastsil series that are well-drained and derived from sandstone in an alluvium setting. This unique geological makeup contributes to the park's distinct natural features and supports its diverse plant and animal life.
