About Cotten Park in Salt Lake City

Ida M. Cotten Park is a neighborhood park in Salt Lake City, Utah. The park was selected as one of the Reimagine Neighborhood Parks to receive funding from the Parks, Trails, & Open Space General Obligation Bond (GO Bond), approved in November 2022. This initiative aims to invest in and activate underutilized parks to increase access to green spaces and quality parks in the community.

The park's history is tied to its namesake, Ida Margaret Cotten, who was born on April 8, 1875, in Reese River, Nevada. Ida was a cherished resident of the Liberty Wells neighborhood, known for her commitment to the community and active involvement in local affairs. After her home was destroyed by fire, the community came together to transform the vacant space into a park. On October 31, 1992, the park was officially dedicated, serving as a testament to Ida Cotten's legacy and her love for the Liberty Wells community.

In 2024, the Salt Lake City Public Lands Department conducted public input sessions to understand how residents currently use the park and to identify desired improvements. Based on community feedback, the final design for the park's renovation will include considerations such as providing swings, preserving existing trees, ensuring shade, maintaining visibility and clear sight lines throughout the park, and including a fence where appropriate around the newly built playground.

The park is part of a broader initiative to support monarch butterfly populations, which have been in decline in recent decades. As of 2025, monarch butterflies are under federal protection and may be added to the threatened species list.
